  1. The purpose of this group is to connect staff on campus who either use or support users of web hosting services on campus. One of the goals of this group will be to determine whether needs are being met by service providers on campus, and if not, how best to meet those needs.

  3. A loose community of users of VDI exists on campus with no formal resources coordinated by the campus. Users of VMware, Citrix, or other solutions should be welcomed to this group, as should any group looking to roll out VDI to streamline their management of pools of similar or identical desktops, especially in a variety of places on campus.

The Cloud Community of Practice is intended for those interested in the use of cloud-based systems, either as infrastructure (e.g., servers, networks in the cloud) or as services (e.g., pre-built web services). Cloud vendors will include Amazon, Microsoft and others as interest dictates. The purpose of the group is to provide education through formal presentations, informal discussion and active sharing of information and methods, and to develop an enjoyable interconnected peer group interested in learning about all things cloud with low vendor egoism.

  5. The purpose of this group is to connect campus professionals who deal with the capture, storage and serving of video content. There are many uses for video content from advertisement to flipping classrooms to grant proposal videos. This group can share best practices, expertise and resources to better serve the whole university.

The Storage Community of Practice facilitates sharing information and challenges to help understand how we do what we do, where we can improve individually and collectively, and strengthen existing relationships to support and learn from each other. The group meets monthly to hear presentations from different IT professionals across campus on how storage is selected, set up, used (from multi-petabyte to department level storage solutions), best practices, and storage related topics of interest.

  9. Most of the time campus I feel IT ignores linux because they think that it's not used enough and/or they all know what they're doing... Case in point: the complexity of supporting thunderbird in the new google universe. An expertise center/webpage would be useful.

  14. The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Community of Practice provides a venue for members of the campus community to share information, experiences, and ideas around GIS topics. We meet periodically for a presentation and discussion of broad general interest, and to provide a face-to-face forum for general knowledge sharing and networking with ones' GIS peers within the broader UMD community.

Aside from basic identification, the campus ID card is currently used for door access, Terrapin Express, Dining Dollars, Meal Plans, Laundry, Time & Attendance, and to acquired services such as attending a career job fair or entering the recreation center. In addition, many departments want to track attendance at certain events and activities. DIT is already working with the Registrars office on some of this. The future of this function will include contactless/NFC, mobile and biometric technology. We have a CoP informally.

  17. This group will discuss agile philosophy and how it applies as part of the Maryland IT software development strategy. Meetings will be conducted in Agile Coffee as well as topical discussion formats. Meetings are once per month at various locations throughout campus.

Desktop Support providers of campus (This function is primarily responsible for responding to tickets (incidents, questions, and service requests) from end users that relate to IT hardware, software, and applications used directly by the end users. This function is often also responsible for the management of assets assigned to end users and projects related to the deployment, movement, additions, or changes (DMAC) to these assets. These issues may be resolved remotely, at the user’s location, or via equipment returns.)

  19. I believe there used to be a VMware Users Group (VMUG) on campus. Possibly not formally running a VMUG but just a gathering of people running VMware on campus. We could discuss what we have in place, how we are running our environments, discuss concerns, etc.
